february critique
MY CONCENTRATION IS REFLECTION AND THE LINE BETWEEN REALITY/ UNREALITY, i guess.
This is my first piece. It is of my friend Hailey's legs and their shadow on the beach. (that's sand on the ground). I hadn't done any forshiz drawing for a while, so it was good to get back to it. I've always like just, well, drawing something. I was trying to do a reflection other than just in the usual reflective surfaces.... yeah. I like the background. I feel like this is a fairly satisfactory piece? The only thing that bothers me is how bright the bumps on the jeans are. From close up they don't look as ridiculously white, but from far away (like in the picture) they stand out. Which bothers me. Does that even make sense?
My second piece is from a picture of a penguin skeleton I took while on the zoo trip (which was great, btw). It's done in charcoal pencil thing, which I've never really used before, so it was fun I guess to figure it out. The skeleton was located in a glass box and so the background is the reflection of the skeleton in the glass. I wanted to create a different feel with the reflection, so it was done in pencil and with hatching-type stuff. Yeah. I think I like this one too. It was slightly frustrating trying to figure out the charcoal pencil.

updates i guess
so i finally basically finished getting my portfolio ready for scholastic. the artist's statement was hard. mine was too short, too :).i really like both of my pieces for this critique in theory, but the second one really needs a perspective fix. oh well. i'll get to that eventually.
oh yeah! by the way, i altered my concentration. i'm not doing horizons any more, i'm doing reflections. which is similar, in my head at least. so, yeah. it should be a much clearer theme.
over winter break i did a painting and i kindof like how it turned out but i'm going to back and add a bit more yellowishreddish to it, i think. (that's it to the side) (i like messy painting apparently)Tuesday, December 02, 2008
sorry for the awkward formatting

i need to figure out...
...how to make my concentration and my pieces make sense. i probably will go back and re-evaluate how i'm going to approach this idea of 'horizons and/or turning points'...
though i liked my first three pieces, i think we all can pretty much agree that they don't make any cohesive sense except to me. and even i'm a little bit iffy on how they fit together.
we'll see how this goes! hopefully, it all works out. =crosses fingers=

CONCENTRATION IDEAS?
OKAY, SO.
I'm not exactly sure what I want to do for my concentration yet. But, I am thinking of doing something with the idea of horizons.
To be perfectly honest, I don't really know what that means. It's not that I am necessarily interested in simply creating images of landscapes or the such. What draws me to the idea of a horizon is the turning point quality of it, how it's an edge into the unknown, etc. I guess I could go into phyiscal horizons, or mental-emotional horizons, whatever those are. Hmm. Not quite sure.
Similar to this, my other idea for my concentration is holes. Holes in space, in memory, in the past, in the body, in the earth, etc. It seems like there'd be more possibilities working with holes than with horizons, but I am still more drawn to the horizons idea than holes. I like the idea of holes because I think it'd be interesting to explore the emptiness, the void, that is incumbent to a hole. Which kinda fits in to the horizons (the void that lies just beyond the horizon).... But I am not sure! Rarr!
ALSO ALSO ALSO: I really like using basic lines and the different forms they take to create an image. (see summer piece) I think that maybe I could use that in my concentration? The transfiguration of line, or something?
Any ideas? I know we already went through this a bunch in class, but if someone has had a spot of inspiration since then, I'd love to hear it. Anything is appreciated.

yayy!
so i think that most people would agree that the field trip today was pretty radical.
looking at all the galleries has really got me in an artsy mood... i'm not to keen on catching up on my calculus homework that i missed from today, so i'm blogging.
yeah man.
i don't really have anything in mind yet but i think i'm going to do some painting/ sketching tonight. the two artists from today that really stuck in my mind were the optical illusion-esque painting guy, and the woman who did the little embroidered plates... we'll see where that takes me.
this is old, but i don't know what else to put in here, so here's a drawing i did last year that turned out really well.
oh! i can put in something from my new sketchbook!
